Scramble Site Update: Non-Archived Reviews Of Discontinued Items

June 2024

For those that may be new to Scramble, we thought it would be helpful to outline our approach to:

  1. archiving, and
  2. discontinued items for which we have no suitable replacement

... and to introduce a minor update to our colour-coded list view icons, that hopefully act as visual shortcuts, conveying the type of gear under review.

1. Archiving

When Scramble's top-rated items are either "toppled" by a superior item or are discontinued and an equally capable replacement is available, an item will be archived (and its list view icon will be faded with a red cross through it) . If you come across an archived review you'll notice the main image is black and white and its replacement can be found simply by clicking on that image or following the link directly below it.

However, quite often, replacements are yet to be discovered (good kit is sometimes hard to find).  So, what do we do with top-rated kit that is no longer available?

2. Discontinued Items

In cases where:

  1. an item has been discontinued by the manufacturer and is no longer available in the marketplace, and
  2. Scramble have yet to find an equal or superior option to replace it

... we decided to keep the existing review active. As we've stated to readers that have emailed us about such "out-dated" reviews: "They remain as an emblem of how the outdoor industry is failing (us, at least)".

However, until now, there was no way a visitor to Scramble would know whether we were aware that such an item was unavailable (perhaps we're asleep at the wheel), or whether indeed we just couldn't find its replacement. As such, we've updated our icons in the list view, so if you see an icon with a stripe in the top-right corner (see image below), this indicates:

  1. the item is unavailable
  2. we haven't yet found a replacement, and
  3. we're actively looking for one

List View Icons

Below is a refresher on what the list view icons are trying to say ...

Update to Scramble review icons for discontinued items

We hope that's of some help.
