Scramble's G-Mod 55 Deluxe Solo / UL 2-Person Tarp - Final Release

Scramble's G-Mod 55 - Final Release

Scramble's G-Mod 55 & Variants

The G-Mod 55 is a minimalist deluxe solo / ultralight 2 person tarp designed to be setup quickly in harsh conditions with minimal fuss. Targeted specifically at bivvy bag users, the G-Mod 55 provides 5.5 sqm of cover and is designed to have one or two sides pegged tight to the ground, creating an effective wind and rain barrier in stormy conditions.

Colour-coded, high retraction attachment loops aid setup in low light conditions and help reduce stress on ultralight tarp poles in high winds, while Cordura reinforcements and Dyneema/Polyester cord loops offer superb tear resistance and load tolerance.

With an impressively small pack size and weighing in at around 400g (including stuff sack) the G-Mod 55 makes for a highly protective and spacious shelter easily capable of accomodating two bivvy bag users. For solo long distance trekking the extra space it provides just makes everything so much easier and more enjoyable.

The G-Mod 55 is designed to work with two poles (one short, one long) in a hybrid A-Frame / Lean-To configuration with 3 guylines and between 6 and 8 pegs.

If you're unsure what this is about, we strongly recommend looking over our full outline of the G-Mod 55 tarp and also the companion piece "Reasons To Go Modular" to see why the G-Mod tarps were developed and the issues they were designed to remedy.

Release News

At Scramble, we're not big fans of tarps bristling with an over-abundance of attachment points inviting you to delve into the world of outdoor origami. Personally, when I find a place to crash, I'm generally knackered and the last thing I want to consider is myriad tarp configurations; having two or three practical options is about right. The G-Mod 55 will make a good Lean-To and a stable A-Frame (on the long or short side), but it's default configuration is a cross between the two, where each corner is pegged to the ground except for one which is guyed out (as pictured above).

A good deal of thought went into the positioning of the attachment points to a) provide enough headroom for sitting upright while at the same time having one long side pegged tight to the ground, and b) give the user the option to tuck in the long side at the back end to make a sealed-off corner. After a fair amount of testing, we think we've got it just right.

Theme & Variations

There are a few variations of the base G-Mod 55 available. None are necessarily any better or worse, they're just different. Below we'll briefly note those differences.

Variation No.1: G-Mod 53

An idential configuration to the G-Mod 55, the only difference is the G-mod 53 is 5 cm narrower on the short side which saves about 40g. A good option for the solo trekker.

Dimensions: Length x Width (Coverage) 260 x 205 cm (5.33 sqm)
Tarp Weight (measured): Tarp + Tarp Bag 352g + 8g = ~360g (+/-20g)
Scramble's G-Mod 53 (Introductory) Price on SYSTEM £68.00

Available on SYSTEM

Variation No.2: G-Mod 55D

The G-Mod 55D is the Development Release. The only significant difference between it and the G-Mod 55 Final Release is how the corner attachment points are finished. The other difference is that they're a fraction lighter.

Development versus Final Release models

Tarp Weight: Tarp + Tarp Bag 372g + 8g = ~380g (+/-20g)
Scramble's G-Mod 55 (Development Release) 30% off on SYSTEM £47.60

Available on SYSTEM

Variation No.3: G-Mod 55HD

The G-Mod 55HD has an additional attachment point on each of the long sides, each with a single Dyneema attachment loop. Unlike the G-Mod 55 it only has elasticated cord loops at the corners. The only other difference is that it comes in a larger, heavy duty black stuff sack made from PU coated nylon. The stuff sack is 18 x 24cm and will easily hold 8 tent pegs and 3 guylines for the tarp.

The G-Mod 55HD has 2 extra attachment points

Attachment Points: 420D PU Coated Ripstop Cordura (Number = ) 14
Attachment Loops: Dyneema/Polyester Cord + High Retraction Elasticated Cord (Corners Only) 14 x 1.5mm / 4 x 3mm
Tarp Weight: Tarp + Tarp Bag 405g + 15g = ~420g (+/-20g)
Scramble's G-Mod 55HD (Introductory) Price on SYSTEM £68.00

A Brief Note on Perfection

The G-Mod attachment points are cut by hand, so there will be some minor variation. We state this because so many products today are mass produced and cut by machine. At Scramble we make things, not to look pretty and perfect but to perform in tough conditions. So we ask for a little leniency when it comes to the look of things, but are happy to be judged firmly on how those things actually perform in the field.

Warranty

All G-Mod tarps come with a 3 year warranty and an extended 90 day return policy. For the non-standard models listed above we may not be able to provide a replacement, in such circumstances we would offer either the G-Mod 55 standard model as a possible replacement or provide a refund. For Development Release models if no replacement is possible we will provide a refund only.
